This week I am featuring the most
frugal decor idea that I have ever posted about...
{ This is my version }
{ of the same look for less }
I wanted a vintage iron piece for the wall
but could not find an inexpensive one.
Our dollar store had some
outdoor black rubber door mats.
I purchased a few then spray
painted them with Heirloom White.
from Home Depot.
I took my hand sander to them after
they were dry to give them an aged feel.
I was quite pleased with the
results and made a few in various
sizes to keep in my decor shed.
I sanded heavier in some areas
to suit my own taste
but they could be left just painted.
Below are photos of how
I did them in my home
during the fall a few years ago
This rubber mat was smaller
and I used the same
Heirloom White Spray paint
Large rubber mat that I used
over the mantel
My updated version
mixed with my coastal decor
I love how versatile they are
these mats can be cut into
smaller pieces and also use different shapes
to create a larger wall grouping.
I will be posting next week
with a dramatic take on this idea.
Thank you to all of you lovelies
who emailed me about this project...
I loved how quick and easy
this way to create
wall art with character.
Fridays post will be on
my love for vintage chairs

Much love to all of you

You are a decorating guru Kate! To take a rubber mat and create a work of art... genius! It turned out beautifully, and I can't wait to see more!
Happy 2012, I hope it's treating you well and that you have a year of prosperity and good health with love and laughter thrown in for good measure!

Love this idea, had you not informed us it was a rubber mat, I would have never known--looks like an expensive piece of ironwork. Great job Kate!!
Blessings, Jeanette
I think this idea is genius!
That mat looks fantastic and one would never guess that it started out as a lowly door mat.
Always checking in to find inspiration here!
Take care :)
I think we need to change your name to Albert Einstein since we all agree you're a genius. I love this and that pretty little head of yours for dreaming it up. Expect this to be copied over...and over...and over...beginning with me!

Can You use any color

May I ask what dollar store did you purchase the mats at?
I have the same question. There are three dollar stores in my town...Dollar Tree, Family Dollar, and The Dollar Store. Did you get it at one of those? :)
Love this idea! How many coats/cans of the Heirloom White did you use?
Wow ~ amazing is all I can say! LOVE your style..
You are a stinking genius! I LOVE your style too....
I went to all my dollar stores and could not find any mats! What dollar store? Even if I could find a mat for $5 I would do this project!
This is seriously the best idea EVER! Thank you so much for posting this!
Hi ladies
Please feel free to email me any questions regarding this project. Just use my link to email me. I first did this project back in 2009 and I live in Orange County The dollar store had them stocked that summer. I have found comparable ones at Wal mart for 7.99 Rite Aid during their summer products. Also Home Depot has inexpensive ones as well.
Fabulous! I've read your blog off and on for a while, but finally remember to click "follow" today! Love!!!

Brilliant is all I can say!
"Wow" how creative Love it !!! was thinking if you cut out small square out from big mat and hang a frame in the middle and use the small cut out mat on the side or a different area of the house. Great job ! : )
Love your stuff!
I loved this so much, I already made one. I have one question how did you hang it?
How did you hang the mat? They look fabulous& want to make one, but curious how you went about hanging it.
I Just Love Your Site Will Try The Mat>

Hi Girls
I hung the mats with 1 and a half inch finishing nail one on each side at top and one in the middle on top as well.
Thanks for all of the lovely notes girls!!!
xoxo
Kate
Ok...no one seemed to ask....how long until the nasty rubber smell goes away? Would love to do one but if I recall these mats STINK. Thanks for the info.
Hi Lisa
I let mine air out for a few days. The spray paint seemed to help seal in the rubber smell.
Warm Regards
Kate
This looks SO fabulous...the distressing really made it look like an old iron grate...can't wait to try this!
These are really awesome! I can't believe they're made of rubber mats!
These are awesome and thank you so much for sharing! It'll definitely be a fund crafty thing for our home!
This is the best ever DIY. You did an amazing job with your decorating to make it look like the real thing!
Wow, what a great idea! I can't wait to try it.
Thanks, Kate.
What a brilliant idea! Love it!
I love this project and used Krylon "make it stone" texturized spray paint... it looks awesome! Can I ask how you hung it when you were done?
Just found you from pinterest. What I love about this clever idea is how you've solved my above- the- fireplace problem/opportunity. My fireplace is curved and beautiful brick, so all I've been able to hang is a wreath. Now I'll be able to bend the "iron" to fit the curve of the bricks. Thanks so much!
Wow
did you use crackle paint?
love, love love it....
WoW !!.. amazing..Just bought my mat..Thanks for sharing.
Love the idea! Wondering if you remember your wall paint color! I love it:)
I love that wall paint color also. Can you remember what it is? You have totally inspired me!
Beautiful! SO wish I could do this but my son is allergic to rubber. :-( Gorgeous. So glad I found your blog!
There are still some things that are worth salvaging because they can still be used. Recycling things is really helpful to the environment as it stops the massive disposal of garbage in a way...

Love this idea. I tried it for my bedroom. However my paint is flaking off. Did u do anything to your mat before u sprayed it?
Love this Idea.....found 12 in squares ...I spray them first and found that there was a lot of not clean cuts. :) so I have clean them up and respray them today. Hubby does not like the over all stress look :( So I think we will have the over painted look. ;)
Anyone figured out what the wall color is? Thanks!
i'm head over heels with this idea! thank you, so, SO much!
I am a recent college graduate and I'm trying to decorate my first 'grown up' apartment on a not so grown up budget!! This is incredible! Thanks for the inspiration!! You're a genius!!
what dollar store, havent been able to find any!!
Genius!!!! and now I will buy several and use them as a headboard for my bed!!!!!!! BRILLIANT! Thank you!
Absolutely love this! What a thinker!!!
Absolutely love this! What a thinker!!!
This is such an ingenius idea. I can't wait to make it. I also love the gray on your walls. What brand/color is it? Thank you!
Brilliant idea
Love the simpleness of this idea, great!!!
I just did one of these great pieces of art and am happy with how it turned out. Now the tricky part, how do you hang it?
Oh sorry, I just found where you said above how you hung them.
Love this, just wondering how to hang it?
Absolutely in love with this project..I just stumbled across it on Pinterest, and have definitely added it to my list this weekend! I do wonder, though, how did you hang it without it stretching, sagging, etc.?

As if 9-2-12, where are you finding this inexpensive mat? I live in Georgia and have looked everywhere. Someone please help me with this!
Thanks,
Cheryl Ellenburg
I've been looking for some inexpensive art for my back deck wall. This is perfect! I'm going to spray mine a deep red (not quite burgandy) & sand them. I can't wait!
I love this idea, however, I would like to know if after 9 months of hanging on the wall, has the rubber sagged? Thank you!
Ladies if you would like the code to the paint color on my walls please use the link to email me. Vista Paints does this mix for me! I will gladly share the code with you!
As far as where to purchase they are carried at Home Depot, Wal mart if you cannot find them at your local dollar store. I have had no problems with sagging due to anchoring them on each side up top and in the middle.
Thank you for sharing you thoughts!
Kate
How did you hang them on the wall? I love them.
Fabulous!!! I did this in my living room!
Hey girl, I'm following you so I don't miss any more fab ideas like this one!
Linda (the other French Hen)Please check out our blog if you get a chance...
Awesome!! I'm definitely going to try this!
FAB idea!!! I'm on an awfully low Christmas budget this year and this idea is PERFECT for a few women I know that have great taste! ....eh hem....and one for me too!! lol
I bet Home Depot, Lowes, Walmart, Family Dollar, and Dollar Tree have good pickins! ...to those that are wondering where to look for rubber mats....
I'm definitely going to try this idea, it's beautiful!! May even try grouping some together for a headboard over the bed...we'll see. Thanks for the great idea.
Love this!!!
This is so Clever! So many possibilities! Thanks for sharing!
WHAT? are you kidding me, this is the coolest thing ever!!!! Love!
XO
Kristin
what can also work is cutting out the center of the mat so only the border remains, then you can use the border around a mirror or a picture as a frame.
XOXO TERRI
Amazing idea! Can't wait to try it out myself!
Love this project!!! I could not find any door mats in a dollar store!!! some are 20 dlls or more, where did you find yours?
Personally I think overjoyed I discovered the blogs.

This. Is. Amazing. I'm in awe at the simplicity and beauty of it! Thank you for sharing!
where do you get rubber mats
How did you hang it? I did this same project, but used a teal color & it looks great! But I wanted it outside on my porch. Since I have brick & siding, I was a little stumped on how to hang it. I ended up using twine, but am curious how you would do it differently.... BTW, I LOVE the distressed white! Very classy!!

Could you please tell us how you hung it? I have a dollar store mat and it's kind of floppy.
Hi Dana I used three inch nails anchoring on the left and right corners across the top and then one directly in the center. Also half way down in the center I added another one. Please email me if you have any further questions. Love Kate. Kkeesee@adelphia.net
This is brilliant! Thanks for the idea!
